Union Market vs The Block! And the winner is….

Union Market vs The Block! Anyone who has toured homes with me has heard my incessant banter about food. Let’s face it, I love it. Love. It. I’ll try just about anything and am always up for something different to try and experience.

I have been eager to go to Union Market for years – really- since it opened…I finally made it. It was better than I expected. By a lot.

The food vendors were fabulous — from the complex Barbeque flavors and the incredibly fresh poke, to the cheese vendor and the in-house butcher — simply soup to nuts fantastic. And, wow, is the neighborhood around Union Market growing up. The rehabs and renos are present throughout the neighborhoods surrounding this gem. This area is hot!

On a second visit to this neighborhood in as many weeks, I dined at Masseria. Seriously one of the best meals I’ve had in DC.  I typically pass on foie gras, so fois-noli? Simply too delish for words! An added plus – celebrity citings topped off this Caps fan’s evening!

Shift now to Annandale, yes non-descript Annandale. I was driving and noticed a place called The Block, next to K-Mart.  It looked a kind of hip and I thought I remembered hearing something about SnoCream there, so I popped in. Inside this tired strip mall is a mini-Union-esque Market. Only a few vendors, but hip and very good. I was treated to Korean comfort food (their word, and it was delish), another stand had ultra-fresh poke (a fave of mine) and I topped it off with SnoCream (a delicious hybrid of ice cream and shaved ice). At night time the place is hoppin’. There’s a long bar on one side, and families, couples, and friends populate the communal tables in the middle. The Block is a hidden treasure, and worth the stop — blink and you’ll miss it. Don’t blink.

Yours in food and real estate, Lisa
